High Energy Mermaid Party Activities
If you’re planning to host a mermaid birthday party, these high energy mermaid party activities will provide you with plenty of inspiration to get your little mermaid and her friends up and moving and having a good time!
1. Swim & Play Pool Games
Although it’s not necessary, we LOVE a mermaid party with a pool! Swimming is probably the most mermaid-y thing you can do, after all! Honestly, a group of children could entertain themselves for hours just swimming, but they get to do that all summer- so why not order some pool toys like dive gems or swim thru hoops, or plan some fun mermaid games for them? Check out our post on the top Mermaid Games to host at your next pool party!
2. Mermaid Tail Transformation Time
Imagine playing mermaids… IN REAL MERMAID TAILS! This is how your mermaid party gets talked about for years to come! Rent or buy swimmable mermaid tails for everyone to play in. Your guests will be shocked and excited as soon as they see the tails! Swimming in a mermaid tail with your best friends is an unforgettable experience. Mermaid tails are only recommended if all children in the party are proficient swimmers. Check your area for mermaid tail rentals or order some mermaid tails on Amazon. Bonus: If you’re feeling extra generous or if you have a small party of close family members, these tails make great party favors!
Reminder: Children should never be left alone in a mermaid tail; children should never be left alone in a pool.
3. Listen to Mermaid Music and have a dance party!
Put on your favorite mermaid songs and dance like you’ve only got legs for one day! Check out these top 10 mermaid songs you NEED to play at your mermaid party, and save this playlist for later! Depending on the group mind, good music may not be enough to get everyone moving. You can break the ice by being the first person to start dancing and invite the birthday girl to join you! Lead some basic dance moves that are easy for the children to copy or play a song that has a popular dance like the Macarena, the chicken dance or the cha cha slide. For indoor parties you may be able to get away with a speaker you already have, otherwise consider purchasing a larger party speaker.
4. Host Musical Mermaid Games
Now that you’ve got some great beats, it’s time to get moving with fun dancing games like freeze dance, or other fast-paced music games like musical chairs. Take a break from standing with a few rounds of “Hot Octo” or some other version of “Hot Potato” with an ocean animal plush toy!
5. Host a Little Mermaid Sing-a-long!
Almost every little girl will know (ALL) the words to Ariel’s famous ballad from The Little Mermaid, “Part of that World.” Put this song on and lead the children in a singalong, encouraging everyone to join! If you have a microphone its even better! Kids love to hear their own voice come through a speaker! I’ll link to my favorite mermaid playlist for kids again incase you missed it!
6. Play Pin the tail on the Mermaid
This pin the tail on the mermaid game is perfect for any mermaid theme birthday! Tape the mermaid poster to your wall where the kids are able to reach it. Each child will get a turn to tape their mermaid tail to the mermaid poster while blindfolded. You can give each kid a couple spins while blindfolded for an extra challenge. The player who’s mermaid tail is taped closest to the correct position wins!
7. Host a Mermaid Tail Potato Sack Race
Truly feel like a fish out of water when you hop in this mermaid race! Line up the children on the starting line, each wearing a mermaid tail potato sack (or a pillowcase). While holding the sides of the sack up with their hands, the kids should hop across the yard, racing to the finish line. The first player to cross the finish line wins!
8. Bust open a Mermaid Pinata!
The coolest parties have piñatas! Everyone loves candy falling from the sky- and the element of danger as a child blindly swings a bat around adds an unmatched level of excitement to any party! This is a small collection of some of the cutest mermaid piñatas available on Amazon for a mermaid theme birthday.

Best of all, you can download this game for FREE! Print from home or send it to the printers!
10. Lead Mermaid Crafts
11. Read or Tell a Mermaid Story
There are lots of great children’s mermaid books online that are worth a read at your next kids party! Put on your best storytelling voice and share a new tale with guests, or pick a classic like Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” and have the kids help you recall character names and events- they love to get involved and KNOW the answer!!
12. Watch a Mermaid Movie
Mermaid Movies are a must for winding down a mermaid sleepover! Cozy up in a mermaid tail blanket, grab some pop corn & watch your favorite mermaid movie! Some favorites include, The Little Mermaid, Aquamarine, Barbie Pearl Princess & more! *p.s. You can get the birthday girl a mermaid tail blanket to make her feel extra special or order one for every kid to double as decor & a take home party favor!
Mermaid Dress Up Activities
13. Sparkle with Mermaid Face Gems
Face Gems are a quick & easy way to get your party looking extra magical! Amazon sells peel stick face gems in variety packs, so you can supply unique designs for each guest. The gems are usually grouped in 1-3 strips per face design, so they are easy to peel and stick – you really can’t mess up placement! *Again these don’t really last in the water!
14. Put on some Mermaid Scale Face Paint
People are always surprised by how easy Face Paint stencils are to apply and how beautiful they come out! Order a mermaid scale stencil and a face paint palette, then apply with a swift swipe of a sponge! You can use the stencil again and again (wipe down in between children) and you’ll have a party of colorful mermaidians in no time! *If you are having a pool party, this is not recommended because it will wash right off!*
15. Get Sparkly with Glitter Hair & Body gel
Give them Mermaid Hair Goals with tubs of chunky Glitter gel that can be applied to the hair/ scalp and face! Use your fingers or a hair dying brush to apply glitter along the part of each kids hair. For the body paint, think music festival vibes and add some glitter gel to highlight the cheek bones and shoulders.
16. Get “tatted” with Gold Foil Temporary Tattoos
Gold temporary tattoos are a great option for pool parties, since the tattoos will not wash off in the water. Amazon sells cute gold mermaid scale print bracelets, and nautical animal designs, and more! Make sure the wrist or area is completely dry before applying the tattoo. *Some oils in certain sunscreens may prevent the tattoos from adhering to the skin properly.
17. Get mermaid hair with colorful extensions & Hair Braiding
Hair Braiding is another classic mermaid activity IMO. If you know how to braid, it could be fun to order some colorful hair wefts / extensions and braid one into each guest’s hair as they arrive. While Braids will hold up well in the pool, it is important that this is an activity you plan to do before getting wet, because braiding a child’s wet pool hair is near impossible.
18. Set up a Mermaid Photo Booth
Set up a mermaid photo booth with an under-the-sea backdrop from amazon and an inflatable clamshell to sit in! Add or opt for blue streamers in the background. Top it off with fun photo booth props like boas, mermaid crowns, thought bubbles & more!
19. Host a Mermaid Fashion Show
If you did ANY of the above dress up activities then you NEED to host a mermaid fashion show! Most guests will arrive in their best Mermaid Outfit so why not take a little time to appreciate each guests outfit, as well as their new hair / facepaint / tattoos from above. You can use a long hallway or an open space outside to have the girls one at a time do their best strut while showing off their complete mermaid look!
