Whether you’re a new mermaid seeking modeling guidance or an experienced mermaid looking for photo inspiration, this series is designed to help YOU reach your full mermaid modeling potential through a close analysis of the top mermaid poses!

“Flukes Up” is both a fan favorite and my personal favorite mermaid modeling pose!

This pose is all about strength and control, & is the #1 cause of mermaids tail-slapping themselves in the head!

How to get into Flukes Up Pose

This pose is pretty simple for light fabric tails, but definitely requires practice for heavy silicone tails. Lay on your stomach and slowly raise up your fluke, engaging your core and lifting with your calves. You’ll want to bring your calves perpendicular to the ground with your head laying low, as the weight of the fluke flops forward over your back. Every tail is different so you’ll have to experiment with how far you can safely bend your legs forward without hitting your head before trying this out in public.

Perfect Party Trick

Once you feel confident flicking up your fluke with grace and control, this is by far a favorite party trick! Although it’s a popular pose in mermaid media, the average person has never seen a live mermaid and is totally blown away when they see you lift a massive tail over your head!

Stay Low – Easy

When it comes to modeling this pose, it’s easiest to keep your fluke lifted and balanced while keeping your upper body pressed to the ground.

Lift Up – Advanced

If you’re ready for a more advanced pose, try pushing up with your hands & extending your arms to different levels.

One Handed – Expert

You can even try to balance on one hand. Or balance yourself in a tree!

TIPS:

Perform this move on flat ground, it’s much harder to lift a heavy fluke if your chest is at a higher level than your hips and knees. Don’t be afraid to ask for help getting into this pose on a photoshoot! Getting a Charlie horse in a tail is never fun – speaking from experience!
