How to buy a Silicone Mermaid Tail
You don’t need to visit a sea witch to get a mermaid tail… you can buy a silicone mermaid tail from a professional tail-maker! You heard right: there are fairy godmothers out there who will take your measurements and your designs, and create a realistic mermaid tail that’s swimmable & custom fit to your body!
Silicone mermaid tails are quite expensive so you’ll want to research your tail-maker throughly before purchasing- you’re here so thats a great first step! I am going to share some of my personal opinions and experiences with some top tail-makers in the industry and I invite you to save the tail-makers that pique your interest so you can further research them.
You should also know that some tail makers are taking orders, some have waitlists, and others may still be in the process of working through orders at the time you are looking to purchase. Be sure to check the company’s website or social media pages for the latest updates.
The last big thing you need to know about buying a silicone mermaid tail is that these works of art take time to make! If you are lucky enough to have your tail maker start on your tail right away, it may still take weeks or months to complete your order depending on the amount of added fins or the complexity of the paint job. The material also needs perfect conditions in order to properly cure so weather can play a big factor in timing. Please be patient with the artist you choose to work with and remember the human behind the company when waiting for your new tail.
Can I buy your Mermaid Tail?
The short answer is no, you cannot buy my custom pink silicone mermaid tail.
I’m pretty attached to my tail so I will never sell it, and any decent tail-maker will steer you away from directly copying another mermaid’s tail design. If you are new to the mermaid community, you will quickly learn how mermaids attach identities to their tails and build full “mersonas” around them. A silicone tail is a huge investment, so many merfolk spend a decent amount of time designing their dream mermaid tail. Stealing a mermaid’s design is a sure way to lose the trust and respect of the mermaid community.
All that being said, you CAN order a custom silicone tail like mine! No gatekeeping here: my mermaid tail is made by Finfolk Productions and I have the Loreena Fluke. You can read more about my custom silicone mermaid tail and the design process here.
Where to buy a silicone mermaid tail?
There are tons of mermaid tail companies out there, some well-established, others just getting their fins wet. Some tail-makers have full warehouse studios, while others may be working out of their home garage. Typically the artists who have the most experience in the industry carry the strongest skillset and are putting out what I consider to be the most realistic mermaid tails on the market. I have seen the rise and fall of several tail makers over the years and I can still say to this day that I am very happy with my choice of Finfolk Productions for my first ever silicone mermaid tail. That being said, there are a handful of professional mermaid tail makers with whom I would trust my next mermaid tail design with!
These are the mermaid tail companies I would personally buy a silicone mermaid tail from rn:
1. Finfolk Productions
Finfolk Productions custom full silicone tails start at $5,500
Finfolk Productions is a pioneer of the mermaid industry, always pushing the boundaries with their hyperrealistic mermaid tails. They are known for their massive flukes, unique fins, and vibrant paint jobs. You can choose from a large selection of flukes and fin designs, all made oversized and life-like! In the past, they have even made custom fluke designs as an upgrade. The tails can be quite heavy out of water, but in water they move like a dream, thanks to the built in finis shooter monofin. When I first ordered my tail, you could even get a finis competitor monofin upgrade, which I am so happy I did because my tail ZOOMS even against the ocean’s currents!
The craftsmanship of Finfolk tails is matched by their incredible paint jobs. Finfolk’s ability to blend colors on opposite sides of the color wheel and create gorgeous detailed designs without muddying the palette is truly amazing, and IMO some of the best painting in the industry! They have perfected several styles of striping and spotting, even pulling inspiration from the patterns on real fish. Check out their instagram or facebook page and you’re sure to be inspired by their breathtaking work!

2. Merbella Studios
Merbella Studios custom full silicone tails start at $4,200
Merbella tails are GORGEOUS! Merbella Studios was the runner up when it came to choosing my first silicone tail maker, and remains a top-choice today! Their mermaid tails look natural yet exotic, best characterized by their bold striping patterns and tons of flowing fins! Their paint style is “generally all very vibrant pearlescent/metallic colors for a very realistic shimmery look.” The way she adds bold outlines to her designs remind me of butterfly wings which totally calls to my fairy side. These tails move beautifully in the water and appear to stand the test of time! I’d love to own a Merbella tail, but for now I am ever so grateful for the opportunity to swim in one while touring with Wands and Wishes Mermaids! She swam like an absolute dream during my practice swim- I only wish I could’ve swam in it a little longer!

3. Mertailor
Mertailor custom full silicone tails start at $2,000
Mertailor tails can be quite affordable and therefore make great starter silicone tails! Depending on the design, these can be some of the most light-weight tails on the market, which can definitely have its advantages in the performance industry. I find the light-weight flukes to be great for splash shows and dry land meet-and-greets, because a light fluke is easy to flip around out of water. There is no third-party monofin built into these tails- Mertailor makes their own patented, full-silicone monofin which makes up the fluke of the tail. In the water, the fluke is very flowy which looks beautiful. However, since there is very little rigidity to the monofin, there is also very little propulsion. While these tails swim majestically in water, I typically prefer something with a little more kick in it when swimming, espcially for open ocean or swimming in any type of current.

4. Creature fins
Creature Fins custom full silicone tails start at $4,000
Creature Fins tails give off an ominous vibe and play into a darker fantasy scene. They make super long tails that swim realistically. I imagine these large flukes are rather heavy and next to impossible to flip around out of water- but I haven’t seen one of these tails in person. The unique design, shape and length is what draws me to Creature Fins as a company and secures their spot on my top list of mermaid tails I’d like to own – or at least swim in (especially their beautiful Kaiju fluke).
There are even more mermaid tail companies out there for you to check out! You may prefer their scale shape, fluke design, or painting abilities, so be diligent with your research to determine the your perfect tail-maker match!

How much does a silicone mermaid tail cost?
The cost to buy a silicone mermaid tail varies based on many factors including the tail maker, the complexity of your designs, and any special upgrades that you may choose to purchase. That being said, a full silicone tail should cost you no less than $1500, or else there is a good chance that the tail maker is cutting costs by using unsafe materials. Silicone mermaid tails cost about $4500 on average, with the lows going to about $2,000 and the highs going up to $10,000! Most tail makers won’t even reply to your request unless you have the funds ready to go. As a mermaid content creator, I get asked multiple times a day if I can give away a tail – I can’t imagine how many times a tail-maker gets asked this question! Be respectful of the artist’s time and have your money ready to go before reaching out.
What are my other options?
If a silicone tail is a bit out of your budget, or if you are still in a “growing” stage of your life (typically under 20 years of age) you may want to opt for a fabric tail. There are several brands on the market which I will go into detail in another post; but my favorite brand for the most realistic fabric tails on the market is Finfolk Productions. You can learn how to get a realistic fabric mermaid tail from Finfolk Productions in my post linked here!
