The Best Mermaid Pool Party Games
Hosting a mermaid pool party? Then you’re gonna need some mermaid pool games to play! Plan ahead with this fool-proof list of fun pool games all with a mermaid theme. Some games have one winner, others are played as teams- this guarantees lots of winners and tons of fun!
Kids will feel like real mermaids discovering sunken treasure with this fast paced diving game at your next pool party! You can use pool toys you already have, but if you want to be perfectly on theme, consider getting two of these treasure chest and gems pool toys!
Divide the kids into two teams. Assign each team a treasure chest where they will put the gems they collect. I like to put the chests on opposite sides of the pool and line up the teams behind their respective chests so they can be somewhat oriented to start the pool game. Toss ALL the gems into the pool, spreading them out as much as possible. On your countdown, both teams will jump into the pool and race to collect the most gems in their chests. Once all the pool toys have been gathered, have the children help you count up the gems in each chest. The team who collects the most gems in their designated treasure chest, wins! For bigger parties, you may want to purchase even more dive gems.
This shark bean bag toss game is perfect for a pool party- it floats on water! Plus the shark shape makes it totally on theme for a mermaid party! One at a time, kids toss their toys into the mouth of an inflatable shark float, in attempt to “feed it”. You can let the shark float freely or you can push it closer or further from each child to make the game easier or more challenging. For the youngest kids, you can hang onto the inflatable shark and play a game of “catch” where you try your best to push the shark in the right direction to make sure the child lands at least one shot!
Swim-thru hoops are always a hit with kids at the pool! Let the kids play freely with the hoops or incorporate them into a pool game such as a swimming relay race. Teams send one player at a time through the course, carrying a “mermaid wand” baton. The player must swim through their hoop, touch the opposite end of the pool, then swim back through their hoop and return to the start. The next player in line should be ready to receive the baton and begin their swim through the course. Kids can hop out of the pool and sit along the edge to signify they have completed their swim. The team who gets all their members through the course and sitting along the edge first, WINS!
For an added challenge, have the kids race “like a mermaid” if they are able to efficiently swim with their legs pressed together to do a “dolphin kick.” Do NOT physically bind a child’s legs when swimming!
4. Siren Says / Swimming Simon Says
This is a fun mermaid twist on the classic game of Simon Says and is the perfect fast-paced pool party game to get everyone moving! To play, one person is chosen to be the Siren and the other players are lined up at one end of the pool. The Siren will give commands for players to follow. If the command starts with the phrase “Siren says” the players should follow. If the command does not begin with “Siren says,” the players should not follow the command. Any players who follow a command given without the phrase “Siren says” are out of the game! Last mermaid swimming WINS and gets to be Siren for the next round.
You can gear the commands based on swim level:
Beginner/ Floaties: “Siren says blow bubbles in the water.” “Siren says make a big splash”
Advanced / Diving: “Siren says swim to the other side of the pool.” “Siren says touch the bottom of the pool”
*Just for Fun: Use a crown to signify the Siren! This will make the position more enticing and kids will love winning their turn to wear the crown!
