Mermaid Tails inspired by Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” Live Action Movie
It’s a little ironic how Disney chose to use CGI for their “Live-action” mermaid tails, despite there being so many talented tail makers in the world. This allowed them to create dreamy silhouettes, unique iridescent opacities, and magical movement in their “underwater” scenes. While the new little mermaid tail seems unattainable to create in the real world, there are a ton of tail makers out there who took a whack at recreating this tail in their own style!
Now YOU can be the Little Mermaid too with all realistic mermaid tails made to look like the live action movie tail. With the much anticipated release of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” Live Action, tail makers around the world have released new movie-inspired mermaid tails! There are several fabric tail options available for purchase now, & some are only available for a limited time! Some tail makers have even taken on the challenge of creating a silicone version of the 2023 Little Mermaid tail and made some very unique works of art.
About the Little Mermaid Live Action Tail Design
Halle’s live action little mermaid tail brings so much more depth & detail to Ariel’s classic green tail. Ariel’s new mermaid tail adds in various of tones of ocean blues with only a small glimmer of the expected emerald green color. Most surprising of all is the splash of magenta pink at the base of her beautiful fluke. Now let’s talk about that fluke! The shape resembles that of butterfly wings and has multiple layers of flowing iridescent fins, stacked similar to a beta fish’s tail.
Of course, none of the tail makers copied The Little Mermaid live action movie directly, (to avoid copyright) but you can see how the movie influenced the color palettes and fin designs! It’s fun to see how the different tail makers handled the flowing dorsal fins. Some chose to include Ariel’s iconic hip fins as well, which I loved to see! Little Mermaid Tails inspired by the new Live Action Movie
Finfolk dropped the “Ariel’s Melody” design for their May Tail of the Month. This means it’s a limited release sale that will end on May 30, 2023. This gorgeous design is available in their discovery tail line and their signature fabric tail line. The signature line has a few different fin options, both custom made for this live action little mermaid tail look-alike. I love how they incorporated Ariel’s hip fins, and the double dorsal fin that peaks around the front is simply stunning!

I love that Fin Fun decided to create not only a tail for Ariel, but also one inspired by our favorite villain under the sea- Ursula! The shiny mesh fin additions are super fun! Double dorsal fins run from the hips all the way down to the heels, then trail along the edges of the fluke. This lightweight material will look super flowy when you swim, just like the new little mermaid tail!

Sereia Guardia did a great job with the butterfly fluke shape and they added beautiful organza fins on both the front and back towards the base of the fluke. They added a nice hip fin made from the same material!

Two Ocean’s Mermaid tails offers fun fin variations on there new little mermaid inspired mermaid tail! I like how they added a light sparkle detail along the fluke and fins.
Silicone Little Mermaid Tails
Haley Mermaid
Haley Mermaid took on the challenge of creating a silicone version of Halle’s new little mermaid tail! She mixed mediums and used some shiny organza fabric to add lots of extra flowy fin details just like Ariel’s tail in the live action movie.
Jurassic Merman
Jurassic Merman created TWO mermaid tails inspired by the new Live Action Little mermaid movie! The first one below features a fully custom fluke designed based on the movie. The tail also features dorsal fins and extra heel/tail fins made from a shiny, flowing fabric. The second tail does not have the custom fluke or hybrid fabric, but it does have Ariel’s hip fins made from silicone. These hip fins form the perfect v-shape waistline that was popularized in the animated little mermaid, however, the color palette more closely resembles the live action little mermaid tail.
